The bus stop glass is silver with the rain

You trace a circle, wipe it clear again

My blue umbrella leans against your knee

You say the weather never bothers me

I know the route, I know the time

I don't know how to cross that line

Keep the blue umbrella till tomorrow

Keep a little reason I can call

I can find my way across the water

I just haven't found the words at all

Keep the blue umbrella by your doorway

Maybe I can tell you when I do

There is something harder than the weather

In standing here so close to you

The bus arrives, you step into the glow

I lift my hand before the doors can close

You point behind you at the empty seat

I shake my head and look down at my feet

Keep the blue umbrella till tomorrow

Keep a little reason I can call

I can find my way across the water

I just haven't found the words at all

Keep the blue umbrella by your doorway

Maybe I can tell you when I do

There is something harder than the weather

In standing here so close to you

At home I write a message, start again

Delete the part about the heavy rain

Before I send it, yours comes into view

You left your umbrella, can I come to you?

Bring the blue umbrella here tomorrow

Bring the little story we both know

I will put the kettle on at seven

You don't need an early bus to go

Leave the blue umbrella by the doorway

Let the last few drops fall where they do

I have had a little time to practice

And I have something I can say to you

The rain is softer than it was before

I leave a second cup beside the door
